Alternative strands within functionalism: Stockholm as a case study

Resumen

En Estocolmo se construyeron desarrollos de vivienda funcionalistas entre 1930 y 1980, un periodo de crecimiento y expansión urbana exponencial. A pesar de la gran diversidad de espacios urbanos que se pueden encontrar en esos cincuenta años, el funcionalismo se suele asociar a su codificación y evolución racionalista que hizo el Movimiento Moderno. Para explorar la mencionada diversidad, el funcionalismo no se entenderá como un estilo, si no como una filosofía o forma de afrontar el diseño que se manifiesta bajo una gran variedad de formas, tal y como fue formulado en los años 20, y reclamado de nuevo en torno a 1950 por, entre otros, Ralph Erskine. El estudio se apoya en Adolf Behne, quien en 1923 describe cuatro formas en las que el funcionalismo se aproxima al diseño: expresionismo, racionalismo, un término medio entre ambos, y utilitarismo. Si los estilos se organizan como una sucesión de periodos independientes, las formas de aproximarse al diseño se han conceptualizado como itinerarios que atraviesan esos periodos. Se han seleccionado casos de estudio a partir de clasificaciones existentes de los periodos del urbanismo en Estocolmo, y se han analizado en relación a tendencias y ejemplos de su tiempo, identificando otras fuerzas motoras que influyeron en su forma final. También se discute hasta qué punto las aproximaciones al diseño descritas por Behne tienen relevancia a lo largo del periodo, así como de qué manera se manifiestan en los casos analizados. Por último, se propone interpretar los desarrollos urbanos como el resultado de la interacción entre estilo, aproximación al diseño y fuerzas motoras que dan forma al espacio urbano.
