Artificial Intelligence Use Policy

i2 Investigación e Innovación en Arquitectura y Territorio follows the recommendations of organizations such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the STM Integrity Hub regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the drafting, peer review, and publication of scholarly articles.

1 Authorship

The use of generative AI tools is permitted to support tasks such as editing, proofreading, translation, formatting, and orthotypographic revision. In addition, if AI tools have been used in the research process—e.g., data collection, data analysis, or similar—this should be clearly stated in the article’s Methodology section, indicating which tools were used and how.

Authors must include a section entitled “Use of Artificial Intelligence” before the reference list, specifying which tools were used and for what purposes or, alternatively, declaring that no such tools were used.

Generative AI tools must not be used to create, alter, or manipulate original research data or research results, including images, graphics, photographs, radiographs, measurements, or similar materials.

Generative AI tools must not be used to generate text that is incorporated into the manuscript. This type of use can be detected using the TURNITIN plagiarism detection system, and if identified, the manuscript will be rejected.

AI tools cannot be listed as authors of articles, images, figures, or any other content, as they do not meet authorship criteria and cannot take responsibility for the work. As entities without legal personality, they also cannot declare conflicts of interest, or enter into copyright, licensing, or rights-management agreements. Authors remain fully responsible for the content of their manuscripts, including any materials generated with AI tools, and are accountable for any breaches of publication ethics.

2 Peer Review

Reviewers must not use AI services to evaluate manuscripts, as this may compromise confidentiality and raise issues related to copyright, privacy, or data security.

3 Editorial Team

The editorial team may use AI tools to carry out technical checks on manuscripts, provided that the content is not shared with the service provider (i.e., tools must be used in a secure, isolated manner). This is necessary to ensure compliance with requirements relating to copyright, confidentiality, privacy, and the non-dissemination of information of unpublished material.
